SBTi - Science-based emission reduction targets

YIT committed to science-based climate targets as the first Finnish construction company in 2021, and the Science Based Targets initiative approved our targets in June 2023. The targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the target to limit global warming to 1.5C.

The targets cover emissions from YIT’s own operations as well as value chain emissions.

Our emission reduction targets

YIT’s emission reduction targets are:

  • YIT commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% by 2030 compared to the 2019 base year*.
  • YIT commits to reduce absolute scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030 compared to the 2019 base year.

*The target boundary includes biogenic emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstock.

Progress against targets

We monitor progress annually and update information as part of sustainability reporting.

Status at the end of 2025:

  • Scope 1–2 emissions: –69% compared to 2019
  • Scope 3 emissions: –15% compared to 2019

How SBTi targets are reflected in practice

Science-based emission reduction targets guide our practical climate work. This includes, for example, that we:

  • monitor emission development at Group and business level
  • assess low-carbon solutions in projects during design and delivery
  • consider emission impacts of material choices as one decision-making factor alongside costs, functional requirements and quality
  • pay attention to energy use and emissions at construction sites as part of site planning
  • work with suppliers to promote lower-carbon products and better emissions data

Carbon roadmap

Our carbon roadmap supports our science-based emission reduction targets. It includes actions to reduce emissions. We published our carbon roadmap at the same time as our emission reduction targets, and we continuously develop and refine the roadmap as part of climate work and sustainability reporting.

In 2026, we will update our carbon roadmap to extend to 2030, and in the coming years our aim is to also prepare a long-term climate transition plan.

Climate governance

Climate work is part of YIT’s sustainability governance. The Board of Directors provides strategic oversight, and operational climate leadership is the responsibility of the President and CEO, the Leadership Team and the sustainability team.

Monitoring emission reduction targets, developing the carbon roadmap and reporting are carried out as part of Group-level sustainability and governance models, in cooperation with the businesses. This ensures that climate work progresses in a systematic manner and is embedded in everyday decision-making.

Reporting

Emissions calculation, target tracking and progress reporting are carried out annually as part of YIT’s sustainability reporting. The report describes calculation principles, boundaries and any changes that affect emissions data.
